As with any breed, PWD's are not exempt from hereditary health problems. When somebody purchases a puppy it becomes an important part of the family. Puppies should be whelped from a sire and dam that have been certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) to be free of hip disorders. They should also be certified by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF)
to be free of eye disorders. They should also be DNA
tested for PRCD PRA. This is a new test and we can now guarantee that all
our breeding stock will produce PRA free puppies. Our selective breeding standards have eliminated the need to test our puppies for GM-1 Gangliosidosis (storage disease), which is a nervous system disorder. All breeding stock is GM-1 tested prior to breeding. Our focus is with health, temperament
and structure.
